Bespoke Mercedes Vito conversion

Our customers provided dimensions for the crates in the rear of the van and tasked us to create a bespoke compact cupboard unit that could house a fridge, sink and electrical system. We planned the space out and came up with a design that would allow the dog crates to be opened inside the living area and also from the rear of the van. There was enough room on top of the crates to make a small double bed, which we also designed in house.

This vehicle had factory-fitted trims inside, as well as a rear heater and air conditioning system. We took the decision to retain all of this to maintain the fit and finish.  Behind these panels and the original headlining, we installed sound deadening and thermal foil and fleece insulation. We then installed wiring for sockets and lighting.

A custom floor also had to made to match the height of the genuine steps to ensure a step free entrance to the van. Durable Altro flooring was installed. The small cupboard unit was an L shape design to allow for the doors to open on the crates. We were also able to squeeze a small sink above the fridge as well as space for the control panel for the electrics and 12v sockets. Below this, a good size cupboard provided storage. We integrated LED strip lighting into the cupboard and added a table rail for a small table/worksurface.

Under the van we installed a Webasto diesel heater, custom freshwater tank and water pump. This provided plenty of heat and onboard water if facilities were scarce on site. We had a custom memory foam mattress made to match the bed design, shaped to fit around the trim panels and rear pillars. We also made the bed frame so that it did not interfere with the main entrance into the van. Finally, we installed swivel seating in the front so that our owners could sit and dine comfortably during the shows.
