Campervan Conversions: Design & Build Process
No two builds are the same here. Every conversion starts with your needs – how you travel, who you travel with, and what ‘home on wheels’ looks like for you – and ends with a van built entirely around that.
1. Discovery, Design & Specification
Your conversion begins with a detailed conversation, so we understand exactly how you want to travel, live and use your van. We assess the base vehicle, discuss layouts, materials, power needs, storage, sleeping arrangements and styling.
At Luke Martin Coachworks, we don’t have standardised layouts, as we haven’t yet met a ‘standard’ customer. But after listening to you, we can absolutely help narrow down the overwhelming number of options with expert advice, personalised recommendations and examples, until you are completely confident we have nailed down your perfect specification.
You will receive a clear proposal with costings, timelines and design recommendations tailored to your budget and lifestyle — from weekend escapes to full‑time van life. Once approved, we agree a timeframe and book your build slot. At this point we will kindly request a 50% deposit to hold your build slot and to begin preparations, including ordering parts. For high value or bespoke parts, we may request further parts instalments, but we will agree this with you in advance.
2.Strip Out, Prep & Structural Work
Whether you’re starting with a clean slate and a brand-new van, or updating an older vehicle, we start by stripping and cleaning the interior back to a basic shell. We then add high quality sound deadening and thermal insulation before carpet lining the interior to ensure your comfort in all road and weather conditions.
3.Windows, Doors, Pop Tops & other Core Infrastructure
Next, we install windows, skylights, and pop tops. This is also where we build the van’s structural and technical backbone:
• Electrical systems (12V and 240V)
• Plumbing (fresh water, grey water, pumps, heaters)
• Solar panels
• Heating, lighting and smart controls
• Off grid power systems
• Gas systems (if required)
Every element is designed for durability, comfort and efficient use of space, and fitted to Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) industry standards and specifications

4.Interior Build & Craftsmanship
This is where the van starts to feel like home. We construct the full interior using high quality materials and joinery techniques, using designs we have perfected, tried and thoroughly tested over the years:
• Fully customisable, hand-built Luke Martin Coachworks cabinetry that successfully combines form and function
• Seat/beds, rail systems and bespoke options, including a unique multifunction boot module (that combines bed extension, storage and picnic bench-style seating in the rear of the van)
• Kitchen appliances including induction or gas hobs, fridges and sink
• Flooring, including Karndean

6. Finishing Touches, Testing & Handover
We complete the build with soft furnishings, trim details, branding and final styling as desired.
The entire system is tested: electrics, plumbing, heating, appliances, safety checks and road readiness. We arrange a detailed handover with you, walking through every feature. You inspect your vehicle and clear your remaining invoice balance. And then, at last, comes the moment, where you drive away in the campervan of your dreams. Throughout the process, you will receive regular updates and a full photographic record of the entire conversion journey.
You are welcome to inspect progress at any point during the project.
We know this is your dream and a significant investment of time, energy, hopes and resources so, for your peace of mind, all our work comes with a 12-month warranty and lifelong support and advice.
